Alphington

The award winning Alphington house, designed by Walter and Walter and built by Fido Projects celebrates natural and raw materials. As a result, it sits nicely in the surrounding landscape.

The house was the perfect canvas for Lygon St Nursery to share a love of the bush with the clients.

In this Alphington landscape design project we incorporated a native Australian and New Zealand bush theme. We planted Australian and New Zealand native plants, to reflect the clients’ cultural connection to the their past and present place.

Lygon St Landscapes undertook project management, design development and  construction of all the green spaces.

The produce garden, decking and lawn areas were important functional aspects of the garden. The unique driveway with strips of planting. As a result, the planting softens the architecture and hard edges. Although the house is surrounded by suburbia, green views make you feel as though you’re in the heart of the bush.

Coburg

Lygon St Landscapes worked with the clients of this Coburg Landscape design and construction project to simplify the existing garden.

The client wanted to unify the backyard into one usable space. Firstly, we removed a large garage which previously divided the backyard. We then replaced it with a light and open pergola for climbing plants. It provides a nice little space in the garden to sit under to enjoy a summer BBQ. The cobblestones and exposed aggregate paving was used throughout the backyard to unify all the different spaces.

We included new garden beds and lawn in the backyard and a small vegetable garden area in a sunny spot behind the shed.

Each space in the garden has a specific use in mind. However, the consistent planting and material palette helps to draw everything together.

Brunswick East

Lygon St Landscapes collaborated with the clients of this Brunswick East landscape design to create a practical space that maximises area.

The courtyard is versatile and although small, perfect for entertaining. The brick paving, inbuilt timber seat and timber decking provide maximum function without compromising quality.

A produce garden sits on top of a corten steel storage shed. The back gate opens up to the laneway with a timber gate and recycled brick fence. As a result, the gate provides a stunning natural backdrop to the garden.

Lygon St Nursery collaborated with the client during the entire process. This included landscape design, obtaining building permits and landscape construction. We also engaged specialist fabricators Lump Sculpture Studio to fabricate the corten shed.

It was important to consider recycled materials. Specifically, we used recycled red bricks.

The landscape design and planting palette is simple. However, the garden is elegant and adheres to the client’s needs and desires.

Canterbury

Lygon St Landscapes planted the front garden of this Canterbury landscape design project with Australian native plants. The garden also features locally sourced bronze granite; and bluestone stepping stones.

The  recycled railway sleeper feature fence is a feature that compliments the front of the house built by Stonehaven Homes.

The house footprint allowed for many opportunities for feature planting outside windows and along paths. The striking ferns provide interesting views to the garden from within the house.

The back of the house already had open views to the nearby park, so we kept the planting simple. We planted low hedges to the boundary fences. This allowed for uninterrupted views from the balcony, however still provided privacy to the pool from the park.

The half basketball surrounded by planting permits functional kids play.

Carlton

Lygon St Landscapes has transformed each outdoor area of our Carlton landscape design project into inviting green havens.

In the landscape design we chose plants appropriate to the aspect of each space that also changed seasonally. As a result, the gardens transform beautifully every Autumn.

We planted deciduous Japanese maples, Smokebush, and Virginia creeper. With the result that the colours and textures are gorgeously striking. The Dichondra ground covers and creeping thyme planted between the pavers convert the once paved area into a green refuge. So, it is a delightful place to sit and enjoy the quiet of this urban courtyard.

Although small, the front garden is packed full of green and burgundy colours, exciting textures and climbing plants.

So each time we visit this project for garden maintenance, we are pleasantly surprised by its exciting growth and evolution.

Keilor

Lygon St Landscapes created a native garden to compliment the surrounding landscape at this Keilor landscape design and construction project. Importantly, the garden celebrates the surrounding landscape of the Maribrynong River.

We planted native and indigenous plants to compliment the surrounding landscape context. We included the iconic Australian plants – Brachychiton rupestris and Xanthorrhoea australis as focal points within the garden.  Then, Leucadendrons from Protea Flora were planted to provide a striking red contrast and backdrop to the native grasses.

There are two distinct parts to the garden. Firstly, there is a formal pool space with bluestone paving and lines of native plants. Secondly, a more informal pond habitat. The existing pond, was renovated and planted with natives and ferns. As a result, the pond provides a stunning outlook from the main bedroom of the house and habitat for local wildlife.

The many flowering natives  look stunning while in flower including the indigenous Epacris impressa. The flowers also provide food for the bees that live in the FlowHive that we installed in the garden.

The native garden and the year round floral displays, soften the built form and hard paving surfaces. The result is a garden with many place to sit and enjoy the views to the surrounding landscape.
